Edward C. “Ed” Gallagher, dubbed “fastest man in the Southwest,” captained the football team and served as president of the senior class in 1908, the same year that he and his fellow track team members earned the title Southwest Conference Champions.

Gallagher was also named assistant physical director his senior year and was soon given responsibility for the track team. By 1911, he was the head coach and the track team was winning awards.

Despite his early success, it’s unlikely that he ever saw himself as a coaching legend at his college—especially in wrestling, a sport that wasn’t even offered by the institution when he was in school.
