From its beginning the university had programs for military drill because military instruction was required at all land-grant colleges as a mandate of the Morrill Act of 1862. In 1916, the university began a Reserve Officer's Training Corps program, which remained a requirement for all men until 1965. The university still takes pride in its highly accomplished Army and Air Force ROTC programs to this day.
