Though the idea of a student union had been discussed since the 1920s, President Henry Bennett got construction started in the summer of 1948. Bennett envisioned a building to enhance students' social, intellectual and cultural well-being. It was built for $4.5 million in student fees-nearly $45 million in current dollars.
