Drs. Edward A. and Mary M. Grula, bacteriology professors at OSU, announced they had managed to stop and to start cell division in bacteria, the only known bacteriologists to do so at the time.

Their achievement helped uncover some of the mysteries of cell division in the search to better understand cancer.
