Haile Selassie I, emperor of Ethiopia, visited the campus on June 18, 1954, to express appreciation for the college's assistance to his country. Selassie had accepted a recommendation from the late Henry G. Bennett to establish an agricultural college in Ethiopia. Several faculty members from Oklahoma A&M College dedicated themselves to the task and Haramaya University continues today in Ethiopia, despite revolutions and political upheaval. The emperor's visit included personal time to meet with the Bennett family and express his fond memories of the late president. OAMC President Oliver Willham greeted the emperor at the airport, where he was also welcomed by Oklahoma artist Acee Blue Eagle (see photo), who presented the emperor with a Pawnee war bonnet and gave him the name “Great Buffalo High Chief.”
