The 200-acre tract was cleared of tall grass prairie grasses and plowed using teams of horses. Each team could only turn a few acres of sod each day, and the entire project took several months to complete.

Soon, temporary frame buildings were evident in the campus area closest to the Stillwater town limits. All the help from locals quickly cemented the strong town and gown relationship that exists at OSU to this day.
