Many Oklahoma A&M College students joined 100,000 homesteaders for the land run on September 16, 1893, which opened the Cherokee Outlet. The event seriously affected the college's entire academic year as students and faculty missed school days while staking and processing land claims.

President Barker was also a participant in the land run and his preoccupation with his homestead reportedly led to difficulties due to periods of absence from office.
