Women were the first to play basketball on campus, which was one of the most popular exhibitions during the college's 1901 field day. The sophomores and the juniors battled it out with black bloomers trimmed with crimson braid, which they sewed themselves in the domestic economy sewing rooms. The College Paper reported that both teams performed well though "...many were the falls and collisions, yet they were taken in as good spirit as any football player ever took his bruises."
