While residence halls were available on campus by 1918, many students still lived in town where they could pay a couple of dollars a week for room and board.

The College Boarding Club, privately owned by J.T. Land, allowed residents to organize the building to fit their purpose, so it soon took on a dorm-like atmosphere.
