Winning the U.S. National Golf Championship at the Wichita Country Club culminated a long climb to the top that included 17 tries for head coach Labron Harris.

The Cowboys edged out the highly favored Houston team with a two-round, one-stroke victory to become only the second team in eight years to dethrone the champions. George Hixon led the Cowboys, finishing one shot out of first place after posting a first-round 67 to lead the tournament after one day. Freshman Don Lackey birdied the final two holes to secure the championship.

The OSU win also signified the first time a Big 8 team had earned the NCAA golf championship. The OSU linksmen (pictured) included Dave Eichelberger, Don Lackey, Duke Evans, George Hixon and Jim Jamieson.
