Under the leadership of Smith L. Holt, the College of Arts and Sciences pioneered offering courses via satellite to remote schools.

Harry S. Wohlert taught an initial pilot class called "German by Satellite." Hildegund Wohlert later joined him in teaching German.

Later, classes would be taught on other various subjects, including physics, calculus and trigonometry.
