Scott Verplank won the NCAA individual golf championship and the Fred Haskins Award for golf in 1986, adding to a shocking list of wins that included the 1985 Western Open, where he became the first amateur to win a PGA Tour since 1956.

He was a member of OSU’s 1983 NCAA Championship team and won the 1984 U.S. Amateur at the Oak Tree Golf Club.

Verplank went on to win eight professional tournaments, including five on the PGA Tour.
