Before Germany surrendered on May 8 and Japan on August 14, the college had earned the title “fox hole university” by offering correspondence courses for servicemen through the federal government.
In the meantime, the last class of WAVES (U.S. Naval Reserve for women) had completed work, bringing the total number of women trained on campus to about 10,000.
As early as the fall of 1945, veterans began flowing back into the classroom with 550 already enrolled for classes.
